Retrofitting of Existing Rc Square Bridge Columns Using Basalt Frp Rebars

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) have been widely utilized to improve the seismic performance of deficient reinforced concrete (RC) columns. In recent years, one of the emerging types of FRPs used is basalt fibers. In this study, the performance of existing columns was experimentally examined before and after applying near-surface mounted (NSM) basalt FRP (BFRP) rebars as a retrofitting technique. Three specimens, representing a deficient square RC bridge column with poor transverse reinforcement detailing, were tested under cyclic displacement excursions and constant axial load. Since bond is the means for the transfer of stress between the concrete and the FRP reinforcement to develop the composite action, one column was retrofitted with smooth NSM BFRP rebars and another with deformed NSM BFRP rebars. The preliminary test results showed that using smooth BFRP rebars could lead the strengthened column to achieve the highest lateral drift meanwhile the column can still carry load after the steel reinforcement yields. On the other hand, the favorable mitigation of the column permanent deformation could be when rebars with rough texture are used.

Confinement Characteristics of Rectangular FRP-Jacketed RC Columns

In this study, FRP jackets were investigated for their confinement effectiveness on rectangular RC columns. Thirteen reduced-scale short columns were tested to failure in axial compression. Variables investigated include: the type of fibers (AFRP, CFRP or GFRP), the thickness of the jacket, the aspect ratio of the rectangular cross section and the radii of the corners. For square columns, GFRP ...

Behaviors of Concrete Columns Confined with Both Spiral and Fiber Composites

Concrete columns confined with high-strength fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites can enhance the strength as well as the ductility of such structures. In recent years, the use of FRP composites to repair and strengthen existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures has been widely used. When the columns of existing RC structures are wrapped with FRP composites, the core concrete of such col...

Theoretical model for slender FRP-confined circular RC columns

An important application of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites is to provide confinement to reinforced concrete (RC) columns to enhance their loadcarrying capacity. However, this application is generally restricted to short columns as existing design guidelines do not contain provisions for the design of FRP jackets for slender columns. This situation has been due to both the scarcity of...

Design of Concrete Railing Reinforced with Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer Bars

The use of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) reinforcement is a practical alternative to conventional steel rebars in concrete structures subjected to aggressive environments. The solution is attractive for bridge deck and rail applications, as it eliminates corrosion of the steel reinforcement, which is the major instrument of degradation. Due to the peculiar physical and mechanical characteristi...

RC Slabs Retrofitting Against Blast Loading by GFRP-PU and CFRP-PU

For reducing the structural damage against blast loading, fiber reinforced polymers sheet (CFRP, GFRP) can be used for retrofitting the RC slabs. In this study specimens of reinforced concrete slabs with or without retrofitting are modeled numerically. The results show that the using of high resistant, elastic material such as FRP sheets, are effective in reducing the deformation of the slabs, ...
